Tokyo - PS3 Launch

Saturday, November 11th, 2006

 Yay! PS3 is out

In Tokyo, Japan :p

^ Posted on IRC

It kinda reminds me of this (see below)

Back when xbox360 was released.

There was a thread on it over at 2chan, but it seems to have been taken down :/

Danny over at Dannychoo.com <Link> had his PS3 confirmed, and will receive it later in the day.

The PlayStation 3 (Japanese: プレイステーション 3,, Pureisutēshon Surī?, trademarked PLAYSTATION 3,[4] abbreviated PS3) is Sony’s seventh generation era video game console, third in the PlayStation series. It is the successor to PlayStation and PlayStation 2 and will compete against Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii.

I remembered back in 2000, I was in Europe around the time PS2 was released over there. Game magazines were covering all about it. It was crazy. Now, it’s the PS3. I wonder in 5-7 years time, would I be able to line up for the PS4 haha :p

I’ll not get the PS3 till probably during national service, where we get paid each month. There usually bugs in the first few varients. It’s funny how sometimes I get things and not use it for it’s intended purpose, but to be awed by it’s awesome technology.

Now let’s just wait for Wii to be out :)

Internship thoughts and decisions

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

I was thinking through on what to do during the final semester of my course (A year from now - oct 2007). The final semester would be over a duration of 6 months (including holidays :/)

It’s the time where either I do an internship with a company (local or overseas) or stay in boring ole’ school to do my in-house project.

In-house projects would probably be a no-no for me (unless I have absolutely no choice). I see the year 3 students standing in the same classroom everyday, staring at the monitor of fate, pleasing it with much tender love and care. It’s kinda like people caged up. Reads B-O-R-I-N-G.

Local attachment/internship would be okay. But it would mean I have to be like a ‘low-level-newly-hired-employee-waiting-to-be-bullied’. That’s from my own twisted point of view however. I don’t really mind internship, but it depends on the company I would be attached with. We have about 400-500 year 2 students in the IT course. Minus away those doing ECAD (E-Commerce Applications development), we have about 200 students remaining? * ECAD is one popular major, at least half of my class  mates are in that major. Having to compete with 200 of those students for work attachments would be tough. (Not excluding those doing in-house) Adding to that, since I am in the networking major, I heard there isn’t much attachment jobs for us, as we require hardware (CISCO 700 dolla routers, switches, etc). We might even end up with jobs that is IT-related, but not that of our major. Meaning I might have to program instead :/ I only know JAVA and basic perl haha. I do not mind web designing however.

Overseas attachment seems ideal. Since it’s 6 months, I rather go overseas. It would be a very good experience. Of course, I’ll have to self-secure a position in a company (which includes calling them up and sending them my portfolio I reckon). Results also play a part in this, which mine aren’t that great :/ I have shortlisted 3 locations, 2 countries.

1. Japan - Tokyo

I heard that someone managed to get attached there. It’s a possibility tbough, so I’m not letting my hopes get too high. It would be rather expensive as well I think. And you do need to be able to speak/write well enough. I have a friend studying there starting march. I’ll wait till after Japanese basic 103 or 104 before deciding.

2. Australia - Sydney or Melbourne

Why these 2 locations? Well, I have relatives/friends over at sydney/melbourne, which makes accomodation easier. Also, I have been to those locations at least twice or more, and stayed in melborune for 10 days. I have cousins studying over there next year as well. There are drawbacks however. Firstly, this means I won’t be able to do JLPT 4 (taking next dec) unless they have places that allow me to take it over there. Also, this would mean 6 months of (physical) isolation from friends, family etc. This would of course bring in new friends during the course of my whole internship. And also I won’t be able to ask for help when I need it. :/

Enough said, these are what I currently think for what’s able to come.

Know your priorities man, know your priorities.

A trip to Chinatown

Monday, November 6th, 2006

疲れた!
(I’m tired!)

みんなーさん、こんばんは。
(Good Evening Everyone)

きょうの遠足は楽しいです。(笑)
(Today’s outing was fun!) (Haha)

多い面白い物事見えました。
(I saw alot of interesting things)

Ok, I don’t know what to write anymore haha.

Today, we had to be tour guides for the 3 Japanese students from Osaka University of Foreign Studies.

The 3 students are Yusuke (裕介) , Hiroko (弘子) and Yukiko (有樹子).

We met up in school, before leaving for Chinatown via the bus and followed by the train.

Haha, I did the “Chinatown によこうぞ” thing as well.

Upon reaching Chinatown, we had lunch over at the local food court (Hawker Centre). The students tried Ban Mee (Noodles) , Popiah with chilli (nfi what it is called in english) , Carrot Cake (Not in a literal sense) and Soy Bean Milk. (All local delicacies)

It was funny when Hiroko tried the carrot cake. She was asking where the carrot was. It was actually in the cake itself.

The white squarish-yet-cube-like thing is contains the carrot. It’s fried with eggs. Delicious.

Popiah was rather not to their liking as it was spicy. I guess they eat lots of sweet things over there. :/

Afterwhich, we headed towards Chinatown Heritage Centre. On the way there, we took some pictures.

^ The not so busy street (since it’s a weekday)

^ Pagoda Street (Chinatown Heritage Centre is located along this street)

They tried Bar Kwa (Barbeque pork) and bought Durian sweets for their friends in Japan.

There were T-shirts with the “No smoking fine, No littering fine etc” sign available as well. It was rather funny. There was the fine of $1000 if you do not flush after using the toliet. I wonder how true is that :)

I saw alot of interesting things in the heritage centre. It’s $4 per admission for students, and $5 for them. The heritage centre showcased on the people who saw in Chinatown in the past. Rather nostalgic.

We also visited Sri Mariamman temple. And thereafter, a trip to Vivocity, the largest retail and lifestyle destination at the Harborfront pecinct. We went up to the Sky Garden, where one could have a 180 degrees view of Sentosa.

^ Crappy shot of Sentosa :/

We had drinks at Starbucks and afterwhich, we bought them to Suntec City where they were to meet up with my japanese teacher.

^ (From left to right) Hiroko (弘子), Yukiko (有樹子), Me, Yusuke (裕介)

While having drinks in starbucks, my friends decided to ‘give’ the students english name.

Hiroko is known as Susan. Yukiko as Emily and Yusuke as Henry :p

In exchange, they translated our names into Japanese :)

Mine’s Takeshi (Hiragana - たけし) (Kanji - 武).

Nice name haha. What’s interesting is that the middle word in my chinese name “引” means “To pull” or something like that. In Chinese, it could either be “吸引” (Attract) or “引导” (To lead). They are somewhat similar :)

In summary, I had a fun day today. Although there were times we had a bit of communication breakdown, we somewhat managed to overcome it :)

I was over at the electronics and computer square today, to enquire for the price of the camera I would get in the near future.

Yes, it’s the Canon Powershot S3 IS.

The store manager qouted it for a price of 680SGD (that’s not including GST). Other stores gave it a 690 and 698SGD.

I took a look at the S3. It was professional looking, unlike the point-and-shoot cameras. Nice positioning of functions. The only bad thing was it’s small lcd display. A small lcd display would mean that it would be very much difficult to determine if the photo you’ve shot would be clear. It’s tripod stand hole is located somewhat near the middle, which was good.

I’ll probably get this camera soon (I hope.) Still saving up for my wishlist <Link>. Damn, I need money quick.

On the sidenote, I have to bring the 3 Japanese uni student from Osaka to Chinatown tomorrow!

Asuka Photoshoot

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

OK. I headed back down to that spot to do the photoshoot today.

Yes, it’s Pandan Reservior.

Asuka Photoshoot Part 1 - November 03 2006 , 5pm
Asuka Photoshoot Part 2 - November 04 2006 , 10.30am

The reason I headed back there was to span some more shots of which I have missed the day before. :) To take this set of pictures, I placed Asuka on the topmost rocks along the reservior. It was tough though, given that the rocks didn’t have a plateau form, and not much of mesa tops (Flat topped) as well.

Now, let’s see the pictures.

Pictures are taken using a Canon Powershot A540. (Thanks Han Xiang for lending me the camera :) )

^ The cute expression with her tongue sticking out. Cheeky :p.
