What happens if your father’s an Otaku? And you’re the only daughter?

While visiting Kinokuniya last sunday, I was browsing through the manga section for any interesting manga that isn’t too long a series when I chanced upon this book - Otaku No Musume-san.

Otaku no Musume-san 「おたくの娘さん」, which literally means An Otaku’s Daughter in English is about a story of a nine years old girl, Kana Yukimura (幸村・叶う), who’s meeting her father for the first time in well, nine years. Eagerly to meet this person who she would call “Papa” and having heard stories on how awesome he is, she heads to Tokyo. However, the very much unexpected happens as it turns out that her father, Kouta Morisaki (守崎・コータ) is actually an otaku!

The two of them then start to live together in the same apartment, with a lot of interesting neighbours that seem to have the same interest and hobbies as Kouta. It’s not surprising that things don’t go smoothly for these two, as being both an otaku and a father doesn’t seem to mix well together.

When I first saw the book title, it spoke out to me that this would be an real interesting story, and indeed it is! Instead of the usual high school romance, action fighting or sci-fi, Otaku no Musume-san is a comedy manga that is simple and very down to earth.

Depicting a relationship between a father and a daughter (親子 - Oyako : Parent and Child), it features how Kouta tries to learn parenting and Kana trying to adapt to her new environment.

If you’re looking for a light hearted and yet comical manga, do try Otaku no Musume-san. The Japanese manga is currently up till volume 3 while scanlations by Akatsuki-manga are up till chapter 6 of the first volume at the moment. You can search the internets for the manga raw ^^;

If you’re learning Japanese, I highly recommend you pick up Otaku no Musume-san and include it in your list of reading materials!

    “What happens if your father’s an Otaku? And you’re the only daughter?”

    You might be Konata!

  2. Dando008 says:

    I was thinking the same thing when I saw this. Konata is a hardcore Otaku!

  3. Soshi says:

    OH MY GOD.

    SO YOU WERE THE ONE WHO BOUGHT THEM.

    I WAS AT KINO ON FRIDAY AND I COULDN’T FIND THEM ON THE SHELVES FOR MY LIFE’S WORTH!

    YOU BOUGHT THEM!

    DDDDDDDDDDD:

    (But it’s an amusing series, ain’t it?)

  4. Soshi says:

    Haha, I was wondering who on earth in Singapore would actually buy the manga because it’s almost virtually unknown.

    Curses Windbell! I need to check though - did you get it from the light-novel area? (The map indicated that it was there, but I checked the whole manga section to be safe.)

    LOL if your father’s an otaku, you might turn out like me too - in which, being Konata would be 10000x better.

  5. windbell says:

    @DS: LOL. Hmm… Konata’s pretty hawt!

    @Dando008: I didn’t think of Konata till then.

    @Soshi: Yes I bought them and it is indeed an amusing series ^^; They are the last copies available on the selves ^^; It’s near the light-novel area, where all the newer mangas are. Did you try Liang Court’s Kinokuniya? They might have them.

  6. Zeroblade says:

    I wish my parents were otaku :(
    Actually wait, that might be a bad thing.

  7. Choo says:

  8. Setsuna-san says:

    fascinating. but it can be kind of weird though when your parents can understand all your moonspeak about otaku stuff.

  9. Mantoro says:

    Interesting. Din noe wat the hell it was about. Thanks for the review. Definitely a good read~!

  10. Lelouch says:

    Haha, the first comment was funny! I’m not surprised if an otaku dad really said that. LOL.

  11. Honya says:

    I’ll take your advice windbell and add this to my reading list but I will blame you if I accidently say something weird to Sensei lol.

  12. windbell says:

    @Zeroblade: Think of all the free eroges you get to try!

    @Choo: The manga seemed to have started only recently and there are currently 3 volumes available.

    @Setsuna-san: Try might just ask “So, have you dolphin waxed today?” ^^;

    @Honya: LOL!
